Job Description

The Corporate Fleet Manager owns the full lifecycle of Tangent's vehicle and trailer assets - acquisition, maintenance, compliance, and disposal - ensuring the fleet is safe, compliant, and available to support production and distribution needs. The role covers a small local truck fleet, at least one unit operating across state lines (which carries its own federal compliance requirements distinct from local operations), and a mix of owned and leased open and enclosed trailers. The role is also expected to build the policy foundation to extend to a company-owned or leased vehicle program for the sales team as the company grows, without requiring a redesign of the position when that expansion happens.

Requirements

Role and Responsibilities
  • Manage day-to-day operations of the company's truck and trailer fleet, coordinating availability with production and distribution schedules.
  • Own DOT/FMCSA compliance for both local (intrastate) and interstate operations, including IFTA fuel-tax reporting, IRP apportioned registration, ELD compliance, driver qualification files, hours-of-service logs, and DOT drug & alcohol clearinghouse enrollment for any unit operating across state lines.
  • Maintain trailer-specific compliance for owned and leased open and enclosed trailers, including annual DOT inspections, registration/tagging, cargo-securement standards, and condition tracking.
  • Develop and implement fleet safety policies, driver qualification standards, and license/MVR monitoring.
  • Manage vehicle and trailer acquisition, leasing, and disposal, negotiating with dealers, lessors, and vendors.
  • Own the fleet budget - fuel, maintenance, insurance, repairs, and lease costs - and identify total-cost-of-ownership reduction opportunities.
  • Schedule and monitor preventive maintenance and repairs to minimize downtime that could affect delivery commitments.
  • Maintain accurate fleet records: mileage, service history, utilization, and compliance/inspection documentation.
  • Manage relationships with fleet vendors, fuel card providers, insurance carriers, leasing companies, and maintenance shops.
  • Monitor driver behavior and safety compliance; flag risk trends proactively.
  • Coordinate accident reporting, claims management, and post-incident vehicle or trailer repairs.
  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies (telematics, fuel management systems).
  • Partner with Production Planning/Scheduling and Sales on delivery vehicle and trailer availability, particularly for OTIF-sensitive lines.
  • Design and administer a company-vehicle policy framework - personal-use rules, assignment criteria, insurance, and tax/imputed-income handling - ahead of a planned sales-team vehicle program, so the fleet can scale without reworking the role.
  • Prepare regular reports on fleet performance, cost, and KPIs for senior leadership.
  • Supervise fleet administrative staff or coordinators, if and when the role's scope requires it.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Skills / Abilities
  • Working knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations for both intrastate and interstate commercial vehicle operations (IFTA, IRP, ELD, hours-of-service, driver qualification files).
  • Familiarity with trailer-specific compliance - annual inspections, cargo securement, registration - for open and enclosed trailers.
  • Strong vendor negotiation and contract management skills (leasing, fuel, insurance, maintenance).
  • Analytical skills to interpret fleet cost, utilization, and safety data.
  • Proficiency with fleet/telematics management platforms and Excel.
  • Experience designing or administering company-vehicle policies for non-commercial drivers a plus, given the planned sales-fleet expansion.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and cross-functional coordination skills, particularly with Production Planning/Scheduling and Sales.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Logistics, Supply Chain, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5+ years of experience in fleet management, transportation/trucking compliance, or logistics operations.
  • Direct experience with interstate/DOT-regulated fleet compliance strongly preferred, given the company's cross-state-line operations.
  • Experience managing a fleet of [X] or more vehicles preferred.
  • Certified Automotive Fleet Manager (CAFM) or Certified Automotive Fleet Specialist (CAFS) preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Primarily office-based, with occasional travel to inspect vehicles or trailers or visit vendor/maintenance sites.
  • May require occasional after-hours availability for emergency vehicle, trailer, or accident issues.
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs.
