Job Title Criminal Investigator – Colorado 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office Overview The Criminal Investigator performs a variety of semi‑complex to complex investigations of conventional crimes, as well as crimes filed and prosecuted through any of the Office’s specialized units, in support of the statutory requirements of the Office of the District Attorney. Assists in all investigative aspects of the prosecution of cases, from pre-filing through final case disposition. Responsibilities Conduct pre- and post‑case filing investigations of semi‑complicated conventional crime activities, and often sensitive investigations. Analyze initial data to determine probable criminal law violations, case validity, and course of investigation; prepare preliminary witness/suspect lists and gather evidence; document findings for the case file. Perform surveillance as necessary; research records; compile, index, and analyze data to develop case files for court filing. Employ various evidence gathering techniques, including witness interviews, suspect interrogation, wiretaps, crime scene searches, polygraph analysis, and crime lab analysis. Meet with attorneys to discuss case preparation and advise on areas such as plea bargaining for highly visible cases. Coordinate investigations with other jurisdictional police agencies; act as case coordinator to cooperating agencies; provide expertise to agencies within the 18th Judicial District. Prepare moderately to complex reports and warrant affidavits; appear in court as needed to testify; serve as a special investigator for Grand Jury proceedings. Prepare search warrants and court orders; plan and execute search warrants, arrest warrants, orders for non‑testimonial evidence seizure, and production of records. Perform duties including office and witness security, meetings with attorneys, handling citizens’ inquiries, process serving, and transportation of principals to court. Provide technical assistance and training to agencies within the district; may assist with unit budget preparation. Maintain professional standards and competency in all duties; independently perform complex investigative functions under adverse conditions and with minimal supervision. Requirements — Skills, Abilities and Competencies Extensive knowledge of civil and criminal law enforcement principles, procedures, and techniques; knowledge of statutes and ordinances applicable to the 18th Judicial District of Colorado; knowledge of police procedures; ability to gain working knowledge of accounting, polygraph, and related investigative fields. Strong interviewing skills; ability to gather, record, and synthesize data; demonstrated interpersonal skills. Ability to prepare complete and accurate reports, warrants, affidavits, and evidence lists for case preparation, filing, and prosecution. Proficiency with standard office equipment (computer, tablet, printer) and software; familiarity with police investigative databases and forensic downloading software. Ability to perform peace officer duties; handle stressful or threatening situations; manage difficult individuals; operate vehicles, firearms, and related equipment used in investigative work. Ability to independently conduct complicated, sensitive, and long‑term investigations with minimal direction. Ability to adapt to changing demands and establish effective working relationships with superiors, attorneys, investigators, suspects, witnesses, and the public; strong oral and written communication skills. Four (4) years of previous police experience, two (2) of which must be at the level of Criminal Investigator. Colorado POST certification as a Peace Officer. Any equivalent combination of related work experience and education will be considered. Pre‑Employment Additional Requirements Must successfully pass pre-employment testing, including an acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR) and background check. Possession of a valid Class “R” Colorado Driver’s License or ability to obtain one within two weeks of appointment. Security clearance required: fingerprinting and a Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) background check. Colorado POST certification as a Peace Officer; minimally qualified as a marksman to unit standards; physical ability to complete and maintain required arrest control and firearms training. Work Environment Work is generally in an office or field setting. Investigators may have extended hours and potentially hazardous situations. Investigators are routinely on call and may respond to emergencies on short notice. Active shooter protocols and emergency readiness are expected. Physical Demands Spends 70% of the time sitting and 30% standing or walking. Occasionally lifts, carries, pulls, or pushes up to 40 lbs; may handle heavier items with assistance. Occasionally uses carts or dolly for carrying more than 50 lbs. Occasionally climbs, stoops, kneels, balances, reaches, crawls, and crouches during duties. Verbal and auditory communication in public and work settings; constant use of eyes, hands, and fingers for computer and equipment use. Visual capacity for computer work.
