Job Description

About Shepherd Electric Supply Since 1892, Shepherd Electric Supply has been the first call when complex, time-critical electrical challenges need to be solved, and reliability truly matters. We move materials accurately and on time, so contractors stay on schedule, projects stay on track, and customers never have to wonder if we will come through. Our success comes from people who take pride in doing things the right way — safely, accurately, and with care for teammates and customers alike. If you want to do work that matters at a company that notices, this is the place. Why This Role Matters Deliveries are where our promises become real. When materials arrive on time, intact, and handled with care, contractors stay on schedule and customers trust us with the next call. The DOT Delivery Driver is often the face of Shepherd in the field. How you show up — your reliability, your professionalism, your attention to detail — directly shapes how customers experience us. This role protects our reputation, supports our warehouse team, and keeps operations moving. Work Shift and Hours: Monday - Friday, 6:00am - 3:00pm Compensation Details: The expected pay rate for this position is starting between $24.00 - $26.00 per hour depending on experience. How This Role Connects to Our Compass We Keep Our Promises: Every route you complete is a promise kept. Customers depend on materials arriving on time and in good condition. When something changes — a delay, a discrepancy, a damaged item — you communicate early, not after the fact. Your reliability on the road is Shepherd’s reliability in the market. We Stay Hungry: You look for ways to improve your routes, your handling, your knowledge of the job. You don’t wait to be told what good looks like — you ask, you observe, and you raise your own standard. We Grow Together: You support your warehouse teammates without being asked. You communicate with dispatch and leadership in real time. When routes get complicated or volume spikes, you stay steady and help keep the whole operation moving — not just your own lane. We Own It: You show up on time, every time. You follow DOT regulations not because someone is watching, but because it is the right standard. When something goes wrong — a vehicle issue, a missed stop, a documentation gap — you own it, communicate it, and fix it. No excuses. We Go Above & Beyond: You treat every customer stop like it matters — because it does. You handle materials with care, represent Shepherd with professionalism, and leave customers confident that we will come through again. You pitch in with warehouse work without being directed, and you look for what needs to happen next before anyone has to ask. Key Outcomes - Organized by what matters, not just what you do. Safe, On-Time Delivery Transport materials on local routes using box and flatbed trucks (manual and automatic transmissions) Load and unload trucks safely and efficiently at each stop Handle materials with care to prevent damage in transit Complete routes accurately and on time — no customer left wondering DOT Compliance & Standards Maintain a valid DOT certification and current Medical Certification cards at all times Operate all vehicles in accordance with DOT regulations and Shepherd safety policies Follow proper lifting techniques and physical handling standards Complete all required documentation accurately and on time Warehouse Support Fulfill warehouse duties as needed: pallet wrapping, picking, and packing customer orders Support second-shift operations when required Contribute to warehouse flow and team coverage without being asked Communication & Professionalism Represent Shepherd professionally at every customer touchpoint Communicate proactively with dispatch and warehouse leadership on route status or issues Flag problems early — do not let a small issue become a missed delivery Treat every interaction with customers and teammates with respect and care What Success Looks Like - After 90 days, you and your Manager should both be able to point to these markers: Routes are completed on time with no recurring delivery errors or customer complaints DOT compliance and vehicle documentation are always current and accurate Materials are handled safely — damage incidents are rare and addressed promptly when they occur Warehouse team trusts that you pitch in without being directed Customers and teammates describe you as reliable, professional, and easy to work with Who Thrives Here - This role is a strong fit if: You take pride in showing up on time, every time — for your team and your customers You handle pressure calmly and do not cut corners when routes get busy You treat every customer stop like it matters — because it does You communicate clearly and flag problems early instead of hoping they resolve themselves You support your warehouse teammates without being asked You hold yourself to DOT and safety standards not because you have to, but because that is the standard You want to be part of something growing — and you bring the consistency that makes growth possible Qualifications & Requirements High school diploma or equivalent required Current DOT certification and Medical Certification cards required Minimum 3 years of driving experience with a clean motor vehicle record Ability to drive box and flatbed trucks with manual and automatic transmissions Knowledge of air brake systems Ability to lift up to 80 lbs. using proper technique Forklift certification preferred Flexibility for second-shift work as needed Strong verbal communication skills; ability to represent Shepherd professionally at every stop Familiarity with Richmond-area routes preferred Ability to successfully complete pre-employment screening requirements This job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by individuals occupying this position of employment.
