Job Title Forensic Investigator Job Overview Salary: $51,353.32 Annually Location: Jacksonville, FL Job Type: Civil Service Job Number: 2025-06697 Department: MEDICAL EXAMINER Opening Date: 08/01/2025 Responsibilities This is technical work in conducting investigations to assist the medical examiner in establishing the means, manner, and cause of death, and developing the identification of the deceased, locating next of kin, and collecting and preserving evidence. Respond to initial reports of deaths and determine if the death falls within the statutory jurisdiction. Conduct death investigations at the scene by questioning witnesses, taking photographs, inspecting bodies, and searching the scene to collect and document evidence. Determine and document the identity of deceased and locate next of kin if required. Meet with next of kin to execute legal identification documents. Photograph or videotape death scenes and victims. Fingerprint cadavers. Review cases with the Medical Examiner pathologist, providing supporting documents. Arrange removal and transportation of the deceased to the Medical Examiner's Office for examination. Collect, catalogue, preserve, measure, and weigh evidence, clothing, and personal belongings; take custody of personal effects, medications or narcotics and arrange secure transfer to relatives, police, toxicologists, etc. Prepare investigation reports. Operate a personal computer to input information and prepare reports; use standard office equipment. Assist other agencies by identifying suspects, proving crime elements, and providing leads. Testify in court regarding evidentiary findings. Coordinate with hospital transplant teams and medical examiner pathologists for authorized donation and removal of organs. May train other employees on activities of the Forensic Investigator. Operate a motor vehicle. Demonstrate proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies. Perform related work as required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Investigative techniques, methods, and procedures. Principles, practices, and instruments used in the collection and preservation of death scene and post‑mortem evidence, and chain of custody. State and local laws, rules, and regulations governing law enforcement and medical examiner activities. Policies and procedures related to receiving, identifying, storing, and releasing bodies. Basic toxicology and ballistic concepts. Medical terminology and basic anatomy. Local area geography. Ability to read and apply laws, ordinances, and regulations. Ability to read maps and street guides. Ability to prepare comprehensive reports. Effective oral and written communication. Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships. Analytical and objective decision making. Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergencies. Observational and factual recall. Operate motor vehicle, office equipment, video and photography equipment, two‑way radio, and personal computer. Ability to lift and move cadavers and other moderately heavy items. Requirements Four years of education and/or experience in criminal justice or other forensic science disciplines. Valid driver's license, maintained; City of Jacksonville certification as a Public Driver; American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigation (ABMDI) registry certification within two years of hire. Probationary period of six months. Subject to safety‑sensitive background checks and drug/alcohol testing under the City of Jacksonville's Drug Free Workplace Policy.
