About The Role

The Medical Assistant Externship is an entry-level, hands-on learning opportunity within our Medical Assistant department. This role is designed for individuals with little to no prior experience who are enrolled in, or have recently completed, a Medical Assistant training program and are seeking real-world clinical exposure. Under close supervision of licensed clinical staff, you will support day-to-day patient care activities and administrative tasks while developing the skills, professionalism, and confidence needed for a career as a Medical Assistant. This is an hourly, per diem position, offering flexible scheduling to accommodate academic commitments or other responsibilities.

What You'll Do

  • Work under the direct supervision of licensed medical and administrative staff to support daily clinic operations
  • Greet patients, verify basic information, and assist with the patient check-in and check-out process
  • Escort patients to exam rooms and help prepare them for visits by collecting basic information as directed (e.g., reason for visit, review of symptoms)
  • Observe and, as appropriate and permitted, assist with taking and recording vital signs under supervision
  • Support the maintenance of clean, safe, and well-stocked exam rooms and clinical areas
  • Assist with preparing and organizing medical instruments and supplies according to established procedures
  • Practice proper infection control techniques, including hand hygiene and standard precautions as instructed
  • Assist with basic documentation in the electronic or paper medical record as directed and in accordance with policies
  • Provide courteous, respectful, and confidential service to all patients, families, and visitors
  • Collaborate with clinical and administrative team members to ensure efficient patient flow and a positive patient experience
  • Participate in training, coaching, and feedback sessions to build clinical, technical, and professional skills
  • Adhere to all clinical policies, safety procedures, and privacy regulations, including HIPAA and organizational standards
  • Perform other related duties and learning activities as assigned, consistent with externship objectives and level of training
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed an accredited Medical Assistant or related healthcare training program
  • No prior professional experience required; interest in gaining hands-on clinical and administrative experience in an outpatient or clinic setting
  • Basic understanding of common medical terminology and clinical concepts learned through coursework or training
  • Ability to follow instructions carefully and work under close supervision in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills in English, with the ability to interact professionally with patients, families, and staff
  • Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, and a strong desire to learn and develop new skills
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and handle sensitive information in accordance with privacy regulations and organizational policies
  • Basic computer skills and willingness to learn clinic-specific software or electronic health record systems
  • Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, and assist with patient-related tasks for extended periods, with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Availability to work on an hourly, per diem basis with a flexible schedule as determined by department needs
