Description Job Summary: Under the direction of the VP of Information Technology, the Network Security Engineer is responsible for leading the technical design, implementation, and maintenance of the organization's network, security, and virtual infrastructure to ensure reliability, performance, and protection of mission-critical IT systems. This role provides advanced technical support for enterprise network environments, VMware-based virtualized systems, and core infrastructure services, and participates in strategic planning and execution of hardware, software, and cybersecurity initiatives. The Network Security Engineer monitors and remediates vulnerabilities, leads incident response activities, and manages vendor relationships to support ongoing infrastructure improvements. In addition to infrastructure responsibilities, this role provides advanced end-user support, assists with day-to-day IT operations, answers help desk calls, manages system updates and configuration changes, addresses alerts, performs backups, and maintains comprehensive documentation. This role participates in the weekend help desk on-call rotation. It is also designated as the primary after-hours responder in the organization's call trees for security/MDR escalations and critical network or infrastructure alerts, with additional tiers providing secondary and leadership escalation support.
Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in MIS or another computer-related field, or equivalent work experience totaling at least five (5) years, is required, including hands-on experience designing, configuring, installing, and troubleshooting both complex network and enterprise virtualized environments. Candidates should have professional experience supporting enterprise network infrastructure, including routing, switching, wireless technologies, and multi-site network administration; administering and optimizing virtualized systems such as VMware or other enterprise platforms; and a foundational understanding of cybersecurity principles, practices, and industry standards. While advanced cybersecurity expertise is strongly preferred, candidates with a willingness to grow in this area under guidance will also be considered. Certifications in VMware, Fortinet, Azure, or cybersecurity are strongly preferred. Experience implementing automation or scripting to optimize infrastructure operations is a plus. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills are required. This position requires the ability to work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and month-end dates; reliable transportation; and the flexibility to provide on-site support to branches and data centers, including locations in Reno and Utah. Candidates should demonstrate expertise with computer systems, multiple operating systems, hybrid on premises/cloud environments, and the identification and remediation of vulnerabilities using industry standards and security best practices. Advanced knowledge of IT operations, helpdesk best practices, and sprint-based planning methodologies is strongly preferred. Candidates must be able to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and operate effectively with limited direct supervision in a multi-site environment, while adhering to structured planning frameworks (such as Scrum) to prioritize work, adapt to shifting demands, and maintain progress on ongoing projects, requests, and tickets.
Essential Job Functions: - Security Administration
- Oversees organization-wide network and system security, including firewalls, IDS/IPS, VPN, email filtering, endpoint protection, and cloud security controls.
- Administers and reviews firewall rules, VPN access, and remote connectivity configurations, monitors firewall and security logs for anomalies.
- Responds to MDR escalations and after-hours security alerts as part of a structured on-call requirement, providing rapid triage, containment, and escalation to the VP of IT as required.
- Implements approved fixes, monitors, and remediates vulnerabilities using industry frameworks (NIST, CIS) and internal security policies and procedures.
- Deploys, tunes, and operates vulnerability-scanning and penetration-testing tools and services; collaborates with IT staff to remediate identified issues.
- Performs routine security and access reviews to ensure appropriate provisioning of users, groups, roles, and permissions across systems and applications.
- Serves as a security Subject Matter Expert (SME), assisting the VP of IT with investigations, audits, and compliance assessments, and providing strategic risk-mitigation recommendations.
- Acts as the technical lead for security standards, operational procedures, and control implementation, driving continual improvement and ensuring operational compliance with the policies.
- Researches, evaluates, tests, and recommends new and emerging security technologies, staying abreast of industry trends, threats, and best practices.
- Contributes to organizational security awareness efforts, including training activities and preventative education.
- Assists with the maintenance and enhancement of disaster recovery plans and may serve on the disaster recovery (DR) team.
- Network Administration
- Technical lead for designing, implementing, configuring, and maintaining multi-site LAN/WAN, routing, switching, wireless, and telephony systems to support secure, reliable enterprise-scale operations.
- Proactively monitors network performance, analyzes trends, and develops solutions to improve availability, bandwidth efficiency, and business continuity.
- Provides after-hours on-call support for critical network alerts and infrastructure incidents, ensuring rapid response to outages or performance degradation.
- Installs, updates, and maintains network hardware and software; ensures network-level security, segmentation, and backup procedures are followed.
- Technical lead for planning, executing, and documenting network upgrades, expansions, migrations, and circuit changes in alignment with change management procedures.
- Supports vendor relationships for circuit procurement, equipment maintenance, telecom services, and SLAs, ensuring alignment with strategic goals.
- Documents and maintains network infrastructure architecture, including logical/physical maps, subnets, VLANs, routes, circuit IDs, and configuration changes.
- Maintains and tracks network inventory and assets in accordance with established standards.
- Server & Infrastructure Administration
- Ensures servers, applications, storage, and core infrastructure services operate securely, efficiently, and reliably.
- Monitors system health, performs routine audits, and manages backup and recovery operations; maintains compliance with retention and recovery standards.
- Supports planning and implementation of server upgrades, network and server hardware refreshes, maintenance fixes, and vendor-supplied patches.
- Analyzes system performance and recommends enhancements to improve scalability, efficiency, reliability, and security.
- Configures and manages file systems, storage, and backup operations, including defining and executing recovery procedures aligned with best practices.
- Assists with developing and enforcing infrastructure and information security policies and procedures.
- Provides escalation-level troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for complex infrastructure issues.
- Tracks operating system lifecycles, supports budget planning for refresh cycles, and recommends infrastructure improvements.
- Acts as technical lead for new server systems, architecture designs, implementations, and client/server strategy development.
- Active Directory & Core Services Administration
- Technical lead for designing, administering, and maintaining Active Directory, including Group Policy architecture, OU structure, security hardening, and domain-level upgrades.
- Manages AD sites, subnets, replication, DHCP scopes, and internal/external DNS nodes to ensure stable and secure directory services.
- Oversees user and group lifecycle management, ensuring proper access controls, group memberships, and compliance with security standards.
- Plans and designs GPOs for server and client configurations to enforce security policies, harden systems, and meet operational requirements.
- Troubleshoots AD-related issues, resolves account/access problems, and conducts regular reviews of domain-level rights and privileges.
- VMware & Virtualization Administration
- Technical lead for designing, deploying, and optimizing VMware and enterprise virtualized environments to ensure high availability, performance, and scalability.
- Performs advanced capacity planning and resource balancing across cluster hosts; implements automation and monitoring strategies to improve operational efficiency.
- Serves as technical lead for VMware lifecycle management, including planning, testing, deploying, verifying updates and patches for ESXi, vCenter, and supporting systems to ensure stability, security, and compliance.
- Provides expert-level troubleshooting for virtualization issues, guiding strategic upgrades, integrations, and architectural improvements.
- Supports plans, designs, and enforcement of standards and strategies for enterprise virtualization, including DR/BCP capabilities.
- Monitors and tunes server, storage, and virtualization performance; executes modifications and improvements to maintain efficiency, reliability, and security.
- Maintains detailed documentation for VMware configuration, mapping, procedures, standards, and DR plans.
- Researches and evaluates VMware and Microsoft ecosystem technologies to support strategic growth and modernization.
- Help Desk & End-User Support
- Provides advanced, escalation-level support for network, software, and hardware issues requiring specialized expertise.
- Proactively manages help desk tickets, ensures timely resolution, documents work, and monitors for compliance with SLAs.
- Participates in the IT Help Desk weekend on-call rotation, providing timely response to end-user issues and escalating complex problems as needed.
- Identifies recurring issues, analyzes trends, and contributes to continual service improvement efforts.
- Performs hardware and software troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, updates, repairs, security patching, and cable management.
- Coordinates equipment repair or replacement with third-party vendors and supports IT inventory tracking and lifecycle management.
- Collaborates with staff across business units to assess technology requirements and recommend solutions aligned with business needs, policies, and standards.
- Documentation & Collaboration
- Creates and maintains comprehensive documentation for systems, architectures, configurations, procedures, standards, and workflows to ensure operational continuity.
- Collaborates with IT team members and cross-functional departments to support organizational goals, strategic initiatives, and technology projects.
- Provides knowledge sharing, guidance, and mentorship to IT team members to support skill development and consistent service quality.
- Ensure adherence to all job-related aspects of the credit union's compliance programs - specifically, but not limited to, the BSA/OFAC/US Patriot Act/Red Flag/Elder Abuse.
