Summary:
The Operating Room Assistant is a member of the operative nursing team who contributes to the comfort and well-being of the patients by performing specifically assigned tasks.
Responsibilities:
Provides skilled, safe, quality patient care within scope of practice.
Transports specimens according to policies and guidelines.
Performs daily cleaning in assigned areas according to established policies, procedures, and schedules.
Obtains blood and blood products from the Blood Bank per policy.
Identifies and transports patients within, from and to the operating rooms per policy.
Assists in transporting case carts to decontamination area.
Monitors fluid and warmer temperatures per protocol and keeps warmers stocked.
Applies knowledge of proper positioning of patients and prepping techniques to assist surgical teammates as needed.
Maintains appropriate inventory of medical gas cylinders and is knowledgeable in the care and handling of cylinders.
Follows established policy and procedures for transporting patient to the morgue.
Prepares for surgical cases based on patient needs. Is knowledgeable of equipment functions and role in surgical procedures. Transports and cleans specialized equipment.
Is flexible and available to work a variety of shifts to ensure coverage for the area.
Responds appropriately to emergency and code situations. Remains calm and works effectively in stressful situations.
Completes continuing education and in-service programs to meet regulatory and job requirements.
Presents and promotes a professional demeanor at all times, exhibits high standards of customer service, supports responsibility, pride, and teamwork, remains calm under pressure, and offers reasonable solutions for problems.
Demonstrates appropriate interaction with and provides recommended care and services to all patients. Ensures the delivery of age appropriate, culturally sensitive and ethical care for patients.
Applies knowledge of principles of standard precautions. Routinely uses PPE to avoid risk of exposure to self and others.
Contributes to the efficiency, effectiveness, quality and safety of the operating room by working cooperatively, respectfully and with integrity.

Education
• Completion of state approved Level I or II Nurse Aide training and competency evaluation program or its equivalent.
• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Licensure/ Certification
• Current listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I (or II) registry.
• Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support.
Experience
At least one year in a health care setting preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Ability to maintain collaborative relationships with teammates, supervisors, administration, providers and the general public.
• Ability to manage many priority activities simultaneously.
• Good interpersonal and customer service skills.
• Able to stand, walk and meet the physical demands of the position for the duration of shift.
• Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
• Basic proficiency with computers.
Valid NC Driver’s License: No
If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
