Job Description Job Title: Part Time Parks Custodian Starting Rate: $18.32 per hour OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF JOB: Dauphin County Parks & Recreation is currently accepting applications for the position of
Part Time Parks Custodian . The overall objective of the employee in this position is to perform custodial and basic facility upkeep duties that ensure County Parks System buildings, restrooms, pavilions, and surrounding grounds are clean, safe, and well-maintained for public use, including opening park facilities and working weekend operations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB: - Performs routine custodial duties including cleaning, sanitizing, and restocking restrooms, pavilions, offices, and other park facilities.
- Sweeps, mops, vacuums, and removes trash and debris from park buildings and surrounding areas.
- Maintains cleanliness of park grounds by collecting litter and emptying trash receptacles.
- Performs light maintenance tasks such as minor repairs, painting touch-ups, and reporting facility issues as needed.
- Assists with basic groundskeeping duties including mowing, trimming vegetation, and seasonal leaf removal.
- Ensures facilities and surrounding areas remain safe and presentable for park visitors.
- Removes snow and ice from walkways, entrances, and other public access areas.
- Sets up, cleans, and restores facilities for park programs, rentals, and special events.
- Maintains and properly uses custodial equipment and supplies.
- Opens parks and facilities as scheduled, ensuring readiness for public use.
- Works a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, and is required to work weekends to support park operations and programs.
OTHER DUTIES OF JOB: - Assists with setting up and cleaning for special events and programs.
- Performs errands as needed.
- Attends in-service training, as directed.
- Performs other job-related duties as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: - Receives moderate instruction and little supervision from Supervisor or Director in regard to daily work duties and special work projects.
SUPERVISION GIVEN: - None.
WORKING CONDITIONS: - Works in a variety of indoor and outdoor surroundings of workspace, lighting, ventilation and temperatures.
- Works with average indoor and outdoor exposure to noise, stress and disruptions.
- Normal indoor exposure to dust/dirt.
- Subject to periodically working in various outdoor elements, depending on nature of job assignments.
- Travels occasionally to perform County assignments.
- Subject to periodic call-in work.
- Operates custodial equipment and basic tools such as vacuums, mops, push mowers, trimmers, and other small equipment used to maintain park facilities and grounds.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL CONDITIONS: - Must possess ability to record, convey and present information, explain procedures and follow instructions.
- Must be able to stand, walk and crawl intermittently for long periods throughout the workday, with occasional sitting, bending, twisting, stooping, climbing, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, grasping and driving, as necessary, to carry out duties of job.
- Dexterity requirements range from simple to coordinated movements of fingers/hands; feet/legs; torso as necessary to carry out duties of job.
- Medium work, with frequent lifting/carrying of objects weighing from 50 pounds; occasionally needs to lift heavier objects.
- Occasionally must be able to move frequently throughout the workday.
- Must have average strength and physical endurance and ability to lift up to 50 pounds if necessary.
- Must be able to safely climb ladders or step stools to perform cleaning, maintenance, and facility upkeep tasks.
QUALIFICATIONS A. EDUCATION/TRAINING: - Graduation from high school or an accredited equivalency program. B. WORK EXPERIENCE:
- One (1) year of working experience in maintenance or custodial environment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: - Must possess knowledge of basic custodial practices, including cleaning, sanitizing, and maintaining public facilities.
- Must possess the ability to safely use and maintain common custodial equipment and supplies such as mops, vacuums, cleaning tools, and related materials.
- Must possess knowledge of workplace safety practices, including the proper handling and use of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
- Must possess the ability to perform light groundskeeping tasks and operate basic equipment such as a snow blower, push mower, or other small maintenance tools as needed.
- Must possess ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Must possess a valid Pennsylvania driver's license and a willingness to travel to perform assignments, as needed.
