Job Description

Position Summary This position is located in the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General, Office of Investigations, Protective Operations Branch. Eligibility & Compensation Law Enforcement Availability Pay (LEAP) : Additional compensation of 25% of the basic rate of pay. Law Enforcement Retirement : Eligible for retirement under both the Civil Service Retirement Systems (CSRS) and the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) for qualifying officers. Requirements include age thresholds and service years as detailed in federal guidance. Training Requirements Successful completion of the Criminal Investigator Training Program at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) or an approved equivalent is required. Applicants must also qualify with Office of Inspector General‑issued firearms and successfully complete the OI Control Tactics training program. Appointments will be terminated if these qualifications are not met. Age Requirements Minimum entry age is 21 years. The maximum entry age is 36 years (the appointment must occur before the 37th birthday), unless sufficient prior Federal service in a covered law‑enforcement position is available. Minimum Qualification Requirements

GL‑07:

At least one full‑time year (12 months) of specialized work experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the GL‑5 level in federal service. Experience may include investigative or analytical techniques applied to case resolution, application of investigation laws, rules, and regulations, and assisting higher‑level investigators with security plans for protection missions. Approval of at least one full academic year of progressively higher‑level graduate education in a related field. Possession of a bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement. A combination of graduate‑level education and specialized experience equal to one year. To evaluate, determine your total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required, determine graduate education as a percentage of the education required, and add the two percentages together. The total must be at least 100 percent. The first 18 semester hours may not be credited toward specialized experience. GL‑09:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL‑07 grade level. Experience must demonstrate execution of criminal investigative techniques associated with protection missions, drafting of security plans for dignitary travel, and collaboration with other law‑enforcement agencies in support of dignitary schedules. A master’s or equivalent graduate degree. Two full years of progressively higher‑level graduate education leading to such a degree. LL.B. or J.D. if related. Unofficial transcripts must be submitted. A combination of graduate‑level education and specialized experience equal to one year, evaluated as described above. GS‑11:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL‑09 grade level. Experience must demonstrate execution of criminal investigative techniques associated with the protection mission, drafting of advance security plans for dignitary travel, and collaboration with other law‑enforcement agencies. Possession of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. Three full years of progressively higher‑level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M. if related. A combination of graduate‑level education and specialized experience equal to one year, evaluated as described above. Firearm Eligibility The incumbent is authorizing to carry a firearm and must meet the Lautenberg Amendment requirements described in Title 18, USC Section 992(g). Convictions of a felony, misdemeanor, or crime of domestic violence (unless expunged, pardoned, or civil rights restored regarding firearms) render a person ineligible for the position.
