UCLA Police Department Officer

Position Summary

Field Responsibilities

  • Patrol designated areas and radio or phone UCPD Dispatch to advise of suspicious or criminal activity, or life-threatening circumstances.
  • Serve as a communication link between the campus community and University Police, fire, and medical personnel.
  • Provide safety and security to the UCLA community including students, staff, faculty, and visitors by deterring crime.
  • Proactively monitor alarm and television systems
  • Operate and monitor two-way radio to communicate with police officers and other personnel.
  • Complete all logs, as required, for each shift worked.
  • Monitor and respond to emails daily.
  • Question and/or escort unauthorized persons found on property.
  • Prepare incident reports for the immediate supervisor
  • Respond to reports of malfunctioning equipment, determine necessary course of action to maintain operation of affected unit(s) and reports issues to supervisor.
  • Participate in regular drills and practice sessions for fire, earthquake, evacuation, first aid/CPR/AED and other emergency situations.
  • Emergency Responder: respond to all emergencies within the assigned area(s) including but not limited to medical, fire, earthquake, disturbances, and threats as they occur, according to established protocols, or as appropriate.
  • Assist in the supervision of evacuations, search and rescue operations in the event of an actual emergency; maintain order among the public and UCLA staff.
  • Attend required training in emergency preparedness.
  • Perform all other emergency preparation duties as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as required and assigned.

Miscellaneous

  • Work mandatory assigned shifts in emergencies.
  • Maintain job knowledge sufficient to work regular or overtime in multiple locations.
  • Record hours via time punches and job assignments for each shift accurately.
  • Maintain all required training levels and certifications.
  • Attend scheduled general meetings of all security employees.
  • Maintain familiarity with all posted notices or other official communications regarding security issues or problems for assigned areas.

Qualifications
  • Skill in interacting diplomatically with the public in a high volume, continuous public contact setting.
  • Ability to assess a problematic or emergency situation and plan/execute an appropriate solution in a quick manner.
  • Ability to independently resolve issues working within a set of policies and procedures.
  • Ability to relay information, either in writing or verbally, in a professional manner, in order to write reports or relay information to the public or to the organization and its representatives.
  • Ability to walk and/or sit continuously for at least 3 hours consecutively.
  • Ability to hear and see to identify life threatening or criminal circumstances and communicate that information over a two-way police radio.
  • Ability to maintain equanimity in the face of resistance, indifference or hostility.
  • Skill in working independently and following through on assignments and duties with minimal direction.
  • Ability to attend to detail and follow through on all assigned duties and tasks to completion in a proscribed period of time.
  • Ability to adhere to all scheduling requirements.
Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations
  • Guard Card from California Bureau of Security and Investigation Services (BSIS) (Required)
  • CA Driver's License (Required) Or
  • Ability to drive legally in the state of California (Required)

  • Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
  • Live Scan Background Check: A Live Scan background check must be completed prior to the start of employment.
  • Age Requirement: Candidate(s) must be 18 years or older to be eligible to be hired.
  • Pre-Placement Physical: Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory physical examination.
  • Driving Record: The position is subject to the California DMV "Pull Notice System" and continued employment is contingent upon proof of a satisfactory driving record.
  • CANRA: The position is designated as a mandatory reporter under CANRA. The employee must sign the "Statement Acknowledging Requirement to Report Child Abuse".
  • Clery Act: The position is a designated CSA (Campus Security Authority) under Clery Act requirements.
